I was so intrigued by the Ezra Klein podcast episode “How to Discover Your Own Style”, I listened to it twice. These are things I’ve been thinking about - though not deeply enough. It was wonderful synchronicity to hear this now. (Available where you listen to your podcasts, as well as the YouTube link below.) How concerned are you about curating your online scrolling/reading/listening in keeping with our own aesthetics instead of letting algorithms and tyranny of popularity decide for you what you consume?
Another episode I enjoyed was “This is Your Brain on Deep Reading”.
Bente Aarby introduces her instagram as “It’s a mess.” But don’t believe it. I open her page sometimes and click through snapshot after snapshot just to calm myself. (Click below to open to see the full image!)
To share some research I’m doing for a new project: Photographs of Tim George’s East End Pubs book.
And finally this beautiful, brief film about a ritual. I think I am especially drawn to this because I am fascinated by lakes. Terrified of lakes. I love the idea of swimming, but my body shuts down at the slightest drop in temperature when a cold current comes. I can panic at the hint of a warm current, imagining the gaping mouth of some sea creature.
“Body of Water” is not at all about those kinds of sea creatures.
Have a great week!
And if you stumbled on something you want to share with me, please do!
Being ourselves is best. Screw the algorithms!
